About Animal Aid Kythira

Animal Aid Kythira AMKE is a non-profit organization set up in 2021 with the goal of providing aid and protection to all creatures in need on the island of Kythira. Our volunteers dedicate their time freely and we keep our overheads to a minimum, so that all donations are used for their intended purpose.

We work closely with Kythira's only vet, Katherine Stathatos, and the local municipality, to provide a safe and comfortable environment for all animals in need and to promote animal welfare throughout the island.

Challenge

At Animal Aid Kythira, our mission is to help animals in need and protecting their lives, to raise funds to buy food, medication, and equipment and help pay for the sterilization of Kythira's stray cat population.

Solution

This year's annual grant from the municipality will be in the region of 13.000€, but as can be seen from last years figures, it is nowhere near enough to make an impact on the stray cat population, which is why Kythira needs your help.

Our vision is to help, protect and improve the lives of all animals, domestic, stray and wild, from the land, sea and air. The turtles and seals that frequent the waters around Kythira sometimes need help, as do migratory birds, hares and even hedgehogs!

Results

In our first few months of activity we raised 1100€, not a huge amount, but every little helps! Most of the funds received went towards the sterilization of stray cats, but it also paid for the treatment of sick cats and only one dog. Kythira does not have a stray dog problem!

We had our first fundraising event in July 2022, which was organised by a local supporter and took place on one of Kythira's lovely beaches. Despite the adverse weather conditions, we were able to collect over 700€! To those that attended, thank you for your support, and we hope to see you again this summer.

At the end of 2022, we had our first meeting with the local municipality to discuss the issue of the islands stray cat population, and how best it can be managed in line with the Greek Animal Welfare Act (ARGOS). As with most Greek islands, stray cats are a big problem, and the amount of time and money needed to keep some control of them is infinite. Since February 2023, some of our volunteers have been supporting the local municipality in its efforts to care for Kythira's stray cats.
